Starting Point Information Centre -
Roadside, Mungrisdale Common (Apronful of Stones)
I don't suppose there'll ever be a problem with finding a space along here. The narrow road seems to go on for ever with a seemingly endless choice of roadside places to park. The best place is next to the disused pits next to the area called Apronful of Stones.

Route Map

It must be about a month ago we arranged this walk. Actually, it could even be more than that / or less than that but however long ago it was it was too far back to know what the weather would give us on the day. So, after putting this down as a 'weather dependant' walk we arrive to see the conditions were as perfect as you could hope for on the first day of the year.

It doesn't last very long but it's a steep rotue up here.

To our surprise, it was here that we passed 4 guys on their way down. They'd camped near the top of Carrock Fell in what they described as atrocious conditions last night. "there was no chance of seeing any stars at midnight so we never bothered leaving the tent".

Looking ahead to the top of Carrock Fell.

and again. That's High Pike in the distance.

Carrock Fell summit. Blimey, it's cool up here ( -12 and a bit wind chill ), time to put some gloves on.

That's where we're heading next.

Looking ahead to High Pike.

and back to Carrock Fell.

High Pike summit.

A long distance view all the way to Skiddaw, taken from High Pike summit.

Yes, we're still at the top. Time to make a move.

We leave High Pike and begin the walk down West Fell.

No comment apart from they didn't half make a mess on part of the fellside down there.

Bomb crater on West Fell.

Looking back up to High Pike.

And to finish, we cross the bridge and make our way back to the cars.
