Parking spaces, Thirlmere Dam

I think I'm correct in saying this is the preferred parking spot for peak baggers who are intent on a quick there and back walk up Raven Crag. And while this is indeed the closest parking spot to Raven Crag, there actually considerably more routes to be had from here. To name a few, you could undertake a complete circuit of Thirlmere, head north to St John's in the Vale and High Rigg or even have a short walk onto Great How.

In or around August 2011 a pay and display machine was installed in this car park.

However, , , , if you continue a short way down the road towards the A591 you can park for free in a lay-by. The free parking spot is indicated by the higher of the two red arrows.

Last night the weatherman said the cloud may be stubborn to move and could very well last all day, , , , sadly he got it absolutely spot on. With that in mind we stuck to lower level today and Jennifer chose Thirlmere. This is three times I've walked around here this year and every one has been thoroughly enjoyable.

Stubborn low cloud.

Little Red Riding Hood looking for Grandma's house.

Looking back towards the dam end of the lake.

Deergarth How Island.

The viewpoint.

Walking through the woods we passed by various bits and pieces of evidence of the farms and buildings that were here prior to the flooding of the valley at the end of the 19th century.

A long distance view back down the lake.

Approaching Steel End.

After dashing across the A591 we headed into the woods where I took this picture of the road we'd just walked along from Steel End.

Wythburn Church taken while we had lunch.

And the inside of the church.

No sign of it clearing up yet.

As we walked along the path between Swirls and Stanah we were treated to a spell of sunshine. It didn't last but it was still very nice.

Thirlmere and Great How.

Fisherplace Gill.

Back at Thirlmere Dam.

I should point out that it wasn't really Little Red Riding Hood, it was Jennifer showing off the jacket she bought while we were on holiday earlier this year.
