Roadside, Threlkeld village

Threlkeld offers lots of roadside parking. If you should decide to park in the centre of the village instead of using one of the car parks, it really is a case of just turning up and finding a convenient spot.

Route Map

Sunshine and showers were forecast today, and that was exactly what I got; although I have to say they weren't spread out quite as evenly as they could have been. I definitely spent more time walking in showers than I did in sunshine, which wasn't really what I wanted, as this was my first walk in almost two weeks. Unless I'm away on holiday I rarely go for this long without a walk, but a mixture of bad weather on the days when I could have got out, and the small matter of needing to finish the decorating at home kept me off the fells. Never mind, , , hopefully normal service has now been resumed.

A view into St John's in the Vale, taken from the road between Threlkeld and the Blencathra Centre.

A close up of Tewet Tarn and High Rigg.

It may have been a little grey and damp, but the road behind the Blencathra Centre was certainly looking autumnal.

Latrigg, seen in front of a rapidly approaching rain shower.

Looking across to Lonscale Fell; topped with cloud. Those with a keen eye might be able to pick out the path running across the side of the fell which I followed later in the walk.

The view back along the track.

The rain was much heavier now and this old ruin offered the perfect place to seek shelter as I put on my water proof trousers. And while I'm here, I thought I may as well take a picture of the side of Lonscale Fell.Back on the track now to cross Roughten Gill.

Back on the track now to cross Roughten Gill.

Crossing over onto the other side of the valley now where I joined the path which runs between Skiddaw House and Gale Road car park.

A long distance view down Glenderaterra Beck.

Well, it looks like the view is about to disappear for a while.
Notice the path on the bottom left of the picture. This was the one I followed earlier in the walk, and although it looks a lot lower down from here, it really doesn't feel like you've done much up hill walking to get to this spot..

Looking back along the path into the gloom and dampness.

Once around the side of Lonscale Crags, the cloud had lifted and I had a clear view across to Latrigg.

Watching the cloud lifting on Skiddaw as I headed straight across the fell to reach the top of Latrigg.

Keswick, Derwent Water and Walla Crag, taken close to the Latrigg's summit.

A close up of the sunshine on the fellside near Tewet Tarn / Low Rigg.

And not so close up.

Instead of following the railway path back to Threlkeld, I opted for the quieter route via Wesco. It was much brighter now and I never saw anyone else until I got back to the car park.

The view back down the narrow road. The fell in the background is Latrigg.
