Roadside spaces, Ravenstone Hotel, Bassenthwaite

There are a few different parking areas along the road between the main car park at Dodd Wood and the Ravenstone Hotel so I have grouped them all together into one.

An obvious circular walk in this area is an ascent of Carl Side via the Ullock Pike ridge and then descending back to the valley by way of Dodd. Should this be your choice of walk then the starting point along this section of road is irrelevant.

Crossing Sandbeds Gill.

Would I get this close to these bee hives in August? Probably not, but there was no worries about getting stung today.

Sand Hill farm.

It's not quite here yet, but here is a sure sign that spring is on its way.

Walking through Dodd Wood.

Once you're out of the woods the view really opens up towards Derwent Water and the north western fells.

On the opposite side of the valley are the Lord's Seat fells.

It's was only a matter of time before the rain reached us; a case of when, not if.

And the summit itself.

Heading back to the Old Sawmill Tearooms. Once you get back into the woods the network of tracks and paths can be a little confusing if you're new to this area, so the only advice I can offer is that heading down hill is good; preferably with Skill Gill in sight.

To reach St Bega Church we followed the public footpath through the grounds of Mirehouse. There is actually a fair bit to see here. So, for those with more time on their hands, and a willingness to part with their hard earned cash, the best bits can all be yours. Perhaps not at this time of year though.

St Bega Church.
I did say is was only a matter of time and unfortunately I was right. A couple of minutes after taking this picture the heavens opened.
