Parking spaces, Gutherscale (below Cat Bells)

A convenient car park for an ascent of Cat Bells, and access into both Newlands Valley and Borrowdale, but be warned, if you try to park here in the middle of the day it's doubtful that you'll get a space.

On a positive note, parking is free.

Derwent Water with Keswick, Lonscale Fell, Blencathra and Latrigg behind.

A couple of minutes walk and we seem to have gained so much height already, giving us views into Newlands Valley.

Looking down to the headland at Otterbield Bay.

Cat Bells is such a popular fell during the summer months, a bit too popular if I'm honest. It attracts both hardened fell walkers who are perhaps doing a much longer walk around the Newlands Valley fells and also families who simply want to climb one of the fells on their visit to the Lakes. There ware no such concerns with crowds today though, not on the fell itself anyway. We only saw another four people on our ascent.

The view across Newlands Valley to Causey Pike, Outerside, Grisedale Pike and Barrow.

And a little further round to the right we see Barf, Binsey, Dodd and the Ullock Pike Ridge, plus Bassenthwaite Lake in the valley.

Cat Bells ahead of us.

Standing on a very windy Cat Bells summit and looking across to Maiden Moor.

A close up of the Lodore hotel.

As we were heading around the lower slopes of the fell we could see the rain moving in fast. The Northern fells disappeared from view and the waterproofs became an unwanted necessity. Thankfully the rain didn't last very long and , , , ,

, , , normal service was resumed with a welcome smile from everyone.

Looking behind us and into Borrowdale Valley.
