Wansfell Pike

Details
Grid Ref NY 394 041
Height 1,575 ft

Wansfell Pike is a mid sized fell found conveniently between Ambleside and Troutbeck. And because of it's location, a walk over Wansfell Pike is a great way to link these two places together in one outing. Ambleside has all the attractions you'd expect to find in a town of this size and Troutbeck is simply a gorgeous little village.

The highest point on the fell is actually found further north along the ridge from Wansfell Pike. Despite this, I've listed Wansfell Pike as a summit because this end of the ridge does have more a feeling of being of a summit than the northern end. Besides this, the view is much better from here.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Bridge House Ambleside - Stock Ghyll - Wansfell Pike
1.4 mile / approx 1300 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This is quite a popular route for people who I assume are staying in or around Ambleside. If you arrive at the top in the middle of the day you often find more than a few family groups admiring the view from up here.

Although I haven't shown it here, a de-tour to see Stockghyll Force waterfalls is well worth the effort. The falls are signposted from the road you follow out of Ambleside.

The final pull onto the top is rather steep, and when wet, can be very slippery.

Route suggestion: Troutbeck Church - Troutbeck - Nanny Lane - Wansfell Pike
1.9 mile / approx 1200 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
There aren't many convenient places to park in Troutbeck that aren't a nuisance to the people that live here so I've started this route from Church Bridge just outside the main village. The majority of the route is along the lovely Nanny Lane and although there are three or four different ways to reach the lane from the beginning of the route, I've simply shown the most direct of them.

The steeper bottom section of Nanny Lane is easy enough to manage, but quite rough under foot and some areas of the ground can be very slippery when wet.

One thing to point out is; make sure you don't walk right past the metal gate which leads off Nanny Lane and onto the open fellside.
