The high fells on the eastern and northern side of Troutbeck Tongue definitely put this little fell in its place. They; the Ill Bell ridge, tower high above at near enough to twice the height of Troutbeck Tongue. As far as long distance views go, you're a little restricted up here. The view along the tongue towards Threshthwaite Mouth is a terrific, but the finest outlook from here is definitely south through the valley of Troutbeck and onto Windermere in the far distance.
So how would I sum up Troutbeck Tongue? Well, if you're inspired by lofty fells with rocks, crags and scree, then this is somewhere you may want to give a miss because it doesn't have any of these requirements. On the other hand, those in search of a gentle little fell set in a gorgeous, quiet valley will return to Troutbeck Tongue time and time again.
