The summit of Stone Arthur is simply the rocky end of a short projection from Great Rigg and the main Fairfield ridge. Hardly what most people would describe as a proper fell, if indeed there is such a thing. If you do happen to approach the summit from Great Rigg the most striking thing is that you're actually walking down hill to reach the top of a fell. And there aren't many you can say that about.
Without trying to belittle the fell, I can't honestly imagine many people naming Stone Arthur their favourite Lakeland fell. Having said that, you'd have to be particularly fussy to place it at or near the bottom of your list.
This is a fell rarely climbed for it's own sake, but that doesn't really matter. The views are superb and it does offer a convenient route onto or off from the main ridge. I have to admit I'm as guilty as anyone for using this fell to these ends.
