Stone Arthur

Details
Grid Ref NY 347 092
Height 1,640 ft

The summit of Stone Arthur is simply the rocky end of a short projection from Great Rigg and the main Fairfield ridge. Hardly what most people would describe as a proper fell, if indeed there is such a thing. If you do happen to approach the summit from Great Rigg the most striking thing is that you're actually walking down hill to reach the top of a fell. And there aren't many you can say that about.

Without trying to belittle the fell, I can't honestly imagine many people naming Stone Arthur their favourite Lakeland fell. Having said that, you'd have to be particularly fussy to place it at or near the bottom of your list.

This is a fell rarely climbed for it's own sake, but that doesn't really matter. The views are superb and it does offer a convenient route onto or off from the main ridge. I have to admit I'm as guilty as anyone for using this fell to these ends.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Starting from the Swan Hotel just outside Grasmere.
1.2 mile / approx 1,300 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++

The first thing to point out here, is make sure you take the second turning on your right and not the first one. If you do take the wrong turning you'll do a short loop around and end up only a little way down the road from where you set off.
After an initial walk along the road and up a tarmac section you'll come to a gate next to a nice little bridge where you should find a small signpost indicating the way to Alcock Tarn (right) and in this case to Stone Arthur (left). From here the route is quite simple to follow.

Route suggestion: Starting from the Great Rigg summit
0.9 mile / 0 ft of ascent
++++++++++++++++++++

Unless you're groping around in the clouds, I can't imagine anyone getting this drastically wrong. Leave the main ridge a little way below Great Rigg summit and simply follow the grassy path 'down' to the summit which is visible for the whole route.
