Rampsgill Head

Details
Grid Ref NY 443 128
Height 2,598 ft

You could argue that Rampsgill Head isn't actually a fell in its own right, and it's really just an area of slightly higher ground between The Knott, Kidsty Pike and High Raise. Well, you could be right, who knows. Whether is or isn't a proper fell is a pointless argument in my opinion. What is certain about Rampsgill Head are the superb views down to the valleys on the eastern side of Ullswater and the surrounding fells.

It's never impossible to make a fell the first one or indeed the only one on a walk, although this one does offer limited options if you want to stick to the paths. The nearest you get to this is to walk up from Hartsop and miss out The Knott which is tantalisingly close.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Hartsop - Hayeswater Gill - Hayeswater - around The Knott - Straights of Riggindale - Rampsgill Head
2.9 mile / approx 2000 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
Hartsop offers a good starting point to get onto the fells in this area. There are a few different options you can take to get high up, but if your purpose is to make Rampsgill Head the first fell you visit, you need to follow the track past the sheep pens and up to Hayeswater. Then comes the difficult bit up the grassy fellside below The Knott. Once you meet up with the path from Satura Crag the going becomes a little easier although not much less steep.

If you wish, you can easily take an off path route across to the summit from the wall below The Knott.
