When viewed from most parts of the valley, you'd be forgiven for thinking Middle Dodd was was a fell set aside from the rest, with an unforgiving steepness and all of its sides leading straight to the top. The reality becomes apparent when viewed from the summit itself or indeed from any of the surrounding heights. Middle Dodd is actually a spur ridge coming off Red Screes; which stands at little more than 130ft higher. And while the route straight up the front is steep and unforgiving, once you each the top you're treated to a short down hill section before continuing to Red Screes on a much gentler incline.
The view southwards may be blocked by Red Screes, but this is more than compensated by the extensive view to the north over Brothers Water.
