Lonscale Fell

Details
Grid Ref NY 285 271
Height 2,344 ft

From the fell itself, and indeed from higher up towards Skiddaw, Lonscale Fell just seems to be a big grassy area you pass on the way to or from somewhere else. It's only when the fell is viewed from a distance that you realise how wrong this is. Just about the best viewpoints for Lonscale Fell are Great Calva, the Cloven Stone area of Mungrisdale Common, Clough Head and also from Tewet Tarn. When you view Lonscale Fell from these places, you see the crags on the eastern side fell, and immediately you think 'yes', this is a fell that deserves to be climbed for it's own sake rather than an addition for a walk up Skiddaw.

While you here, don't forget to walk across to the splendid viewpoint found a short way to the north east. This would have made a much better summit had it been a little higher.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Gale Road car park - Whit Beck - Lonscale Crags ridge - Lonscale Fell
2.3 mile / approx 1400 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
I've listed two ascent routes to Lonscale Fell from Gale Road car park and to be honest I can't really pick a preference from them. The biggest difference is that this route is likely to have less people than the other one.

While walking across the southern side of the fell the going really is quite a leisurely affair, but don't be lulled in to a false sense of ease. When you reach the gate and turn uphill, this is an 'in your face' steep walk. The views across to the eastern, central and north western Lake District are fantastic and as I like to describe them; uninterrupted.

Route suggestion: Cale Road car park - Jenkin Hill - Lonscale Fell
2.6 mile / approx 1600 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This route follows the so called Skiddaw 'Tourist Route' as far as the fence / gate on Jenkin Hill. Up to this point the path is very steep and unrelenting, yet simplicity itself as far as actually following the route goes.

The path across Jenkin Hill to Lonscale Fell has very little up hill walking, but can be quite wet under foot after periods of rain.

Route suggestion: Blencathra Centre - Roughten Gill ford - Guide Stone - Burnt Horse ridge - Lonscale Fell
3.7 mile / approx 1600 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
The best route to the top of a fell doesn't have to be the shortest, and this just proves my point. Setting off from the wrong side of the valley might seen like a strange thing to do, but the track around the east side of Blease Fell offers a lovely walk which soon brings you to the bottom of Lonscale Fell's north ridge; strangely named Burnt Horse.

The ridge itself in a little steep in places, but well worth the effort.
