Little Hart Crag

What a pity this fell isn't called Little H'e'art Crag because I've always had my own theory about the name. In a complicated world such as ours the simplest explanations are often dismissed in favour of something much more in depth, perhaps with some historical link. In the case of Little Hart Crag, I like to think the name has something to do with the shape of Scandale Tarn which is more or less the same as a heart. I suppose I could back all this up a bit easier if Scandale Tarn were called Little Heart Tarn, but it isn't, so the reality is I'm probably way off the mark and waffling on about a load of rubbish. Whatever you think yourself, here's my ten cents worth to do with as you will.

The fell isn't really somewhere I'd set out to walk on its own, but being in such a convenient place, I can't help but include the fell on most of the walks I do in this area. And because of it's central location in the area it generally works out as the perfect place for something to eat. Needless to say I must have eaten many, many sandwiches on Little Hart Crag over the years.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Cow Bridge - Hartsop Hall - Caiston Glen - Scandale Pass - Little Hart Crag
3.1 mile / approx 1600 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This is a route with two distinct half's, the first one is through some lovely countryside with hardly any up hill walking at all, then, in total contrast, you enter Caiston Glen; a great Lakeland route if ever there was one.

Once the top of Scandale Pass is reached, the route to the summit should be trouble free. It's not too far, and you can see the top almost the whole way up.

Route suggestion: Ambleside - High Sweden Bridge - Scandale - Scandale Pass - Little Hart Crag
3.9 mile / approx 1800 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
I've started this route from the main car park in Ambleside, but please feel free to find somewhere else to park as this one really is a legalised form of highway robbery. Wherever you find to park you still need to follow the same route out of the town and once you turn Kirkstone Road onto Sweden Bridge Lane it literally is a simple case of following the same road / track through Scandale to the top of Scandale Pass.

High Sweden Bridge is one of the most attractive bridges in the Lake District and is a nice bonus to this route takes you through the woods at Rough Sides.

The walk through Scandale is very easy to follow, but should you come here after periods of rain you have the difficult job of crossing one of the tributaries of Scandale Beck. Considering how popular the route is, I can't believe no one has ever built a bridge across this here.
