What a pity this fell isn't called Little H'e'art Crag because I've always had my own theory about the name. In a complicated world such as ours the simplest explanations are often dismissed in favour of something much more in depth, perhaps with some historical link. In the case of Little Hart Crag, I like to think the name has something to do with the shape of Scandale Tarn which is more or less the same as a heart. I suppose I could back all this up a bit easier if Scandale Tarn were called Little Heart Tarn, but it isn't, so the reality is I'm probably way off the mark and waffling on about a load of rubbish. Whatever you think yourself, here's my ten cents worth to do with as you will.
The fell isn't really somewhere I'd set out to walk on its own, but being in such a convenient place, I can't help but include the fell on most of the walks I do in this area. And because of it's central location in the area it generally works out as the perfect place for something to eat. Needless to say I must have eaten many, many sandwiches on Little Hart Crag over the years.
