Harter Fell, Mardale

Details
Grid Ref NY 460 093
Height 2,552 ft

This is the Harter Fell I always refer to as 'the other Harter Fell', not because I think the Eskdale one is superior, but for no other reason that I walked on the Eskdale one first.

This is a fell with two totally contrasting faces, the southern side of the fell is grassy, gentle and to an extent, somewhere you could happily wander about and explore with ease. The northern side however, has an impressive collection of rocks, scree and boulders and if I were to stick my neck out, I'd go so far as to say from Haweswater, Harter Fell is just as impressive as anything you'll find in Wasdale or above Glenridding.

If you approach the summit from Gatesgarth Pass or Kentmere Pike during poor visibility, the fence helps to ensure you don't miss your target. The difficulty here would be walking to or from Nan Bield Pass. Given the amount of rocks and crags in the area, you don't want to get this wrong.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Mardale Head - Small Water - Nan Bield Pass - Harter Fell
2.1 mile / approx 1700 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
Once you get past Small Water the route takes a turn for the steeper and the going gets much harder. To state the obvious, this is definitely the more dramatic side of Nan Bield Pass. I know they did, but I just find it hard to imagine teams of fully laden pack-horses walking over here.

Should you do this route in bad weather the shelter at the top of the pass offers not only a guarantee that you are where you think you are, but some most welcome shelter. Be careful on here during stormy condition, as the wind gets funnelled into the small gap at the top of the pass, making it a difficult and noisy place to walk.

Route suggestion: Mardale Head - Gatescarth Pass - Little Harter Fell - Harter Fell
2.2 mile / approx 1700 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
The walk up Gatescarth Pass is pretty straight forward and not a huge distance by any stretch of the imagination, but to me, it always feels much harder and further than it should; possibly because it's quite rough under foot which always makes the going harder. Despite that, this is still a very enjoyable route where I always feel like I'm much further away from the rest of the world than I actually am.

If you walk as far as the gate at the top of the pass, you've gone too far.
