Crag Fell

Details
Grid Ref NY 097 143
Height 1,710 ft

Crag Fell is another of the many fells with totally contrasting sides to it. To the west and south the fell is grassy, gentle and prone to hold onto water. To the north and east however, you're presented with something totally different. This side has rocks, crags, scree and some extremely steep sections of fellside; it also has the best view.

Although I've only included two routes onto Crag Fell, there are quite a few others you could take, but these are perhaps a little too difficult to recommend or they take you into a pathless and somewhat confusing area on the south side of the forest. I'm sure these two will more than satisfy most people anyway. It is possible to walk directly up from Anglers Crag and past The Pinnacles, but that way is reserved for those with a substantial experience of this type of terrain.

I suspect most people would want to include Grike if an approach was made from this direction. And why not; it would be silly to miss it out. I have done walks where I've visited each of these fells first, and to be honest, it makes no difference at all which you visit first. Anyway: I'm not here to talk about Grike so I'll move on.

This route is definitely gives you a high reward for the amount of effort you put in. The walk along the forest track is pretty easy going and since they felled quite a lot of the trees, the views have really opened up.

NOTE:
Due to recent tree felling operations the woodland marked on the map is somewhat misleading. The forest track however is spot on.

This is a nice little route with some great views over Ennerdale on the way up and what is possibly the best view of Ennerdale from the top.
