Catstye Cam

I've always thought that nature got things just right, and as pretentious as we are, us mere humans couldn't improve on things if we tried. Although with the area around Catstye Cam I wouldn't mind asking for a temporary modification to the original spec. Let's lower Red Tarn and Red Tarn Beck so they don't reach higher than Kepple Cove Dam, remove Swirral Edge altogether, it's so eroded now that it isn't as much fun as it used to be anyway, and to finish off we could lower the saddle between Catstye Cam and Helvellyn to the height of the dam in Brown Cove. The result, , , , a positive separation from Helvellyn which would turn Catstye Cam into just about the finest fell in the Lake District. But, this isn't to be, Catstye Cam is the way it is, and although it is a great shame, the fell is generally viewed as no more than a spur on the eastern side of Helvellyn; albeit with a nice high, mountain shaped summit.

Catstye Cam definitely deserves its membership within the elite groups of fells that can easily be identified from any direction. A view of the pointed summit seems to pop up in the most unlikely of places.

In stark contrast to the crowds you'll find on Helvellyn, sitting at the summit of Catstye Cam in peace and quiet is always a pleasure.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Glenridding - Greenside Road - Kepple Cove Dam - Catstye Cam
3.3 mile / approx 2400 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This is arguably the best, and if it's not the best, it's certainly the quietest route up Catstye Cam. The route has a long steady walk leading you to Kepple Cove Dam, before a final half mile hike up the steep north ridge of the fell. All round views may be somewhat restricted while you're walking up the ridge but this takes nothing away from the enjoyment.

Route suggestion: Glenridding - Greenside Road - Red Tarn Beck - Red Tarn - Catstye Cam
3.7 mile / approx 2300 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This route also follows Greenside Road out of Glenridding, but rather than continuing along the quiet track to Kepple Cove, this one takes you up the side of Red Tarn Beck and up to Red Tarn. This can be a very busy place during the summer months.
