Birkhouse Moor

Details
Grid Ref NY 364 160
Height 2,350 ft
As with many other fells, Birkhouse Moor has been overshadowed by a more famous neighbour; in this case Helvellyn, and you don't get much more famous then that. If that isn't enough, Birkhouse Moor is also very close to, and can be avoided by those heading for Striding Edge which I assume is the main objective of many people who walk here. I know there isn't really any competition against these two places, but that doesn't mean the fell is undeserving of some attention. There are actually some good walks to be had that take you to Birkhouse Moor without the need to go set foot on Helvellyn, Striding Edge, Swirral Edge or Catstye Cam.

Route suggestions

Route suggestion: Glenridding - Greenside Road - Red Tarn Beck - Red Tarn - Birkhouse Moor
4.1 mile / approx 2000 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This is a nice long route to Birkhouse Moor, and for obvious reasons this is a walk to do if this is the only fell you intend to visit. The route is quite easy to follow and because if it's length, the climb of 2000 ft is well spread out so it won't feel as taxing as some of the routes in this area. Anyone interested in old mine workings will find the Greenside Mine ruins to be a real treat.

Don't forget to walk across to the north top which has a much better view than the true summit.

A good option for a return walk would be to take the Mires Beck route back to Glenridding or even head straight down the ridge to Lanty's Tarn.

Route suggestion: Glenridding - Rattlebeck Bridge - Miresbeck - Birkhouse Moor
1.9 mile / approx 1800 ft ascent
++++++++++++++++++++
This route also sets out from Glenridding, but is less than half the distance of the Greenside Mine route. This is a very popular route for people heading from Glenridding to Striding Edge and then onto Helvellyn so it does get quite busy.
