Red Screes Tarn

Map

Located about ten seconds walk from the summit of Red Screes, the tarn must have one of the smallest catchment areas of any in the Lake District. As its best source of water is directly out of the sky, I’m always amazed that this rather shallow tarn never seems to dry up during long hot spells, or at least I’ve never seen it completely dry. Suffice to say finding the tarn shouldn’t cause much of a problem at all, unlike many others that you do have to hunt about for.

A treat for anyone up here during the warmer months is being able to kill two birds with one stone by visiting one of Lakeland’s high summits and enjoying a relaxing lunch next to a lovely tarn; quite literally at the same time.

Despite the ease at which you can get to Red Screes Tarn, being found at a height of over 2,500ft the tarn is actually one of the highest in the Lake District. The two obvious named tarns which are definitely higher are Foxes Tarn and Broadcrag Tarn. This next claim is undoubtedly a personal one and some people may agree (or not), but it could be argued that many of the ‘unnamed’ tarns which are indeed higher than Red Screes Tarn aren’t really what you would call a tarn at all. So without being too scientific and without analysing things out of existence, I’m going to make a bold statement and say that Red Screes Tarn is in the top half dozen highest tarns in the Lake District.
