Scarth Gap (pass)

Anyone wishing to travel over to Buttermere from the north western end of Ennerdale, where the farms and the village are found, would have been mad to walk all the way through the valley to use Scarth Gap when they could easily walk over Floutern Pass. This leads me to believe that the main reason why Scarth or Scarf Gap as it used to be called, came into regular use was because it formed part of the route between Wasdale and Buttermere. In the days before motorised traffic, walking over Black Sail Pass and then Scarf Gap Pass would have been preferable to the long journey around.

Scarth Gap itself is a short journey with little in the way of difficulty.
